Women may be the fairer sex, but are they the choosier sex? Scientists aren't so sure any more.

When it comes to dating, the long-held belief is that blokes generally think with the small brain between their legs while dating women are programmed to make mating decisions based upon social status, wealth, ambition and intelligence.

The evolutionary explanation says this is because females have a bigger investment in reproduction -- after all they are the ones who have to endure pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding. So the last thing they want to do is select a dud to father their offspring.

However, the latest speed-dating research suggests when it comes to the romance equation men and women may not be as different as we think.

The typical speed-dating event has the women remain seated waiting to be wooed while the men go from belle to belle at set intervals and make their pitch.

But researchers at Northwestern University in the US decided to mix things up a little when they invited 350 students to take part in a round of four-minute speed dates.

They had women remain seated for half of the event and for the next half asked the men to remain seated while the women did the approaching. This was all done to determine who was choosier -- the men or the women.

The answer, it turned out, was neither. It all came down to who was making the approach. Regardless of gender, those that were instructed to approach other daters were less choosey and more likely to ask to meet later for a date.

The boffins believe the person that makes the first move, usually the male, is filled with such confidence they are more primed to ask for that first date.

In contrast, because women are accustomed to being approached and it makes them feel more desirable and thus makes them far more selective.

So according to the scientists behind the research, the gap between the sexes may be more down to social conditioning rather than evolution.

But what about the dating scene in Ireland? Well, the bad news for the guys is that it seems Irish women are "the fussiest in Europe", according to a recent survey by online dating agency Parship.ie.

"From my years of experience women are more choosey," agrees speed-dating expert Huge Redmond."And Irish women do tend to set the bar very high for themselves at the risk of letting guys who could have been a great match fall under the bar.

"I think they have to realise that not everyone is Brad Pitt or drives a Porsche and that they have to be a little more forgiving. If there is some level of attraction they should give it a go even if the guy does not tick this box or that box."

Redmond established a successful speed-dating business in 2003 after finding his own true love on a singles walk, and now runs Getout.ie, the singles events dating website.

"I was living in the States working 70 hours a week and had no time for socialising. So I went speed dating and I really enjoyed it. After the second one I got a date with the girl who I thought was the best looking of the lot and we continued to see each other for about two years. Then I returned to Ireland and after holding a singles walk, met my partner."

Since starting to dabble in directing dating, Redmond says he has helped hundreds of couples hook up and some to even go on to tie the knot.

"At an event we organised in Galway we had 28 people attend and four people ended up getting married," he says.

"Speed dating is a very effective tool. You only have a couple of minutes and a lot of decisions are made. You know very quickly if someone is compatible or not. I think it helps you rely on your gut feeling because your gut feeling is generally right."

Redmond claims that 75pc of those who attend speed dating events come away with a phone number and a shot at love. However, many people are still sticking to the old-fashioned way.

"There is still a massive stigma associated with internet and speed dating here," he says.

"Irish people are a bit private and would prefer to say they met at opposite ends of a car crash rather than on the internet."

However, even though they may be very picky he feels Irish women are more open when it comes to giving speed dating a chance.

"I think they are less stigmatised by going to the events," he says. "They see them as a night out and a chance to unwind and have fun. And if they get lucky so be it. Men on the other hand need a little more prodding. I think the average guy is more comfortable sitting on a bar stool waiting for Miss Right to walk in."

Thin models a problrem worldwide: a 21 y.o. Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston, 5-foot-8 and just 88 pounds, died in November from complications caused by anorexia nervosa.

New York Fashion Week opened on Friday 2. At BCBG Max Azria show in New York 19 models walked down the white runway in a dreamlike state. An estimated 8 million Americans suffer from eating disorders, and 7 million of those are female, according to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, a Highland Park-based advocacy and support group founded 40 years ago. Nearly 9 out of 10 eating disorders occur in women under age 20, the group said. The association is in the midst of launching a Web campaign to encourage consumers to shop only at companies that promote a healthy body image.

"We think the whole debate shouldn't be about the models, but about the images hundreds of millions of marketing and advertising dollars are spent on to bombard the general public," said Keith Sanderson, spokesman for the association.
